Jair Bolsonaro: Disqualification Stab in the Back, But I’m Not Dead

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to eight years of ineligibility for “abuse of power”. In response to his disqualification, Bolsonaro has called it a “stab in the back” and has announced that he will appeal his conviction to the Supreme Court. He also warned, “I am not dead”

The reason for Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction

Jair Bolsonaro was convicted for “abuse of power” and for spreading false information about Brazil’s election system just months before he lost his reelection bid last October. He was also facing allegations that he encouraged attacks on the capital’s government center by a mob of his supporters on Jan. 8. The case was one of 16 that Bolsonaro was facing in Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, and a guilty verdict and ban from office could lead to another seismic shift in Brazilian politics if it withstands appeals. The trial began on June 22, 2023, and Bolsonaro was sentenced to eight years of ineligibility for running for office again. The panel of judges concluded that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country’s electronic voting system.
