OCU Advocates Wider Distribution of Apple’s iPhone 12 Radiation Update Across EU

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has put forward a noteworthy proposal regarding Apple’s recent software update intended to address radiation emission concerns in the iPhone 12, specifically in France. OCU asserts that this software update should not be confined to France alone but should encompass all European Union countries.

In September, Apple officially confirmed its plans to release a software update to tackle radiation levels that had led to the withdrawal of the iPhone 12 from the French market. Apple’s stance was that the issue pertained to the specific protocols used in France, rather than posing any health risks.

However, given that radiation emission regulations are uniform across all European Union member states, OCU argues that the software update should be made accessible to all mobile phones sold within EU countries.

In their press release, OCU highlights that the analysis conducted by the French National Frequency Agency (ANFR) identified radiation absorption rates exceeding the limits for measurements at the extremities, without implications for proximity to the head or trunk.

Furthermore, these measurements adhered to the most stringent conditions mandated by regulations, involving the mobile phone transmitting at maximum power, operating under adverse network conditions, and positioned to maximize the antenna’s impact on the body. OCU also underscores that the safety thresholds established by the European Union are 50 times lower than the levels required to induce a 1ÂșC increase in head temperature.

OCU’s call for a broader dissemination of the software update underscores the significance of maintaining consistent standards and safety measures throughout the European Union. This ensures that consumers across member states receive equitable protection and information concerning radiation emissions from their mobile devices.
