Silenced Voices: Yet Another Murdered Journalist Unearthed in Mexico

Mexican journalist Luis Martín Sánchez Iñiguez was found dead on the outskirts of the state capital, Tepic, on July 9, 2023. He is one of three journalists to have been abducted in the state in recent days. Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with more than a hundred members of the Mexican media murdered or disappeared since 2000. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, no peacetime government in the world provides less redress for such killings than Mexico. In 2022, at least 13 journalists were killed in Mexico, making it the deadliest year on record for journalists in the country. Since the start of Mexico’s drug war in 2006, 133 reporters have been killed for motives related to their work, and another 13 for undetermined reasons. The murders of journalists have a chilling effect on colleagues left behind, and many fear that journalism itself is dying in Mexico.
